The last years

He performed on stage for the last time at the Teatro Grande in Brescia, in the role of Paolo in Francesca da Rimini one of his favourite romantic characters. He still continued to be closely involved with his beloved music but without performing in public, and he dedicated much of his energy to his numerous singing pupils seeking a career in opera.

A group of opera-lovers in Brescia founded the Giacinto Prandelli Opera Club, which remained in operation until 1993. The long list of young – and as yet unknown – singers who performed there included the mezzo-soprano Sonia Ganassi, who is now a well-known interpreter of works by Rossini.

Azzali Editori of Parma published Del recitar cantando by Cornelia Pelletta, a fully documented biography of the tenor, accompanied by an exclusive CD of his best romanzas, chosen by the singer himself.

The book was presented at the Scala Museum and in the foyers of the Teatro Regio in Parma and the Teatro Grande in Brescia.

During the ceremony in Brescia, Mayor Paolo Corsini bestowed on Prandelli the Winged Victory, the town’s highest award for lifetime achievement.

Giacinto Prandelli passed away at his home in Milan on 14th June 2010 at the age of ninety-six.
